When you lose weight, where does the fat go?

Many people think that it’s “burnt” as energy but this isn’t correct.

Nor does it come out through your poo – that’s made up of about 75% water, with the rest being fibre, a few zillion bacteria and probably some indigestible bits of meat you might have eaten.

It’s only after you know that all fat is just made up of just carbon, oxygen and hydrogen that you realise the answer.

When fat is used by your body, it turns into carbon dioxide and and water – and you breathe it out!

This leads us on to the next fascinating fact about weight loss.

The air you breathe out is heavier than the air you breathe in.

In fact, you’re getting rid of about 9 milligrams of carbon atoms (derived from your body vaporising fat) with every breath.

It may not sound like much, but with about 17 breaths per minute, you’re losing about 250g of carbon each day – that’s about 80kg a year!

In fact, you breathe out about 20kg of carbon in your sleep every year. Yes, you lose weight every night!

Unfortunately, the reason these amazing figures don’t show up on the scales is because we all take in about the same number (or more!) of carbon atoms residing happily in our food and drink.

You may well think after these amazing revelations “So what”!

Indeed, but you now know where the fat goes – and you know why that old adage of “eat less, move around more” has never been truer.

If you take in less carbon (eat and drink less) than you breathe out, and you continue breathing – you will lose weight!

That’s the irrefutable theory but all that involves reducing the amount you eat and being more active – and we’re back to the same old problem!

It’s REALLY HARD to reduce food and drink intake for the long term and most of us don’t have enough time in the day to do more exercise – so what to do?

At New In 90, we believe that the ONLY way to take back control is NOT to reach for the latest fad diet or hot exercise regime, but to transform your daily habits and routines around food and exercise. By doing this you’ll be making permanent changes – changes that will let YOU control your weight, fitness and, ultimately, your health.

It’s YOUR choice.
